A major influx of "indies" (independent) Christian artists has hit the internet lately, offering everything from bluegrass gospel to bluesy and modern rock style music - and a lot in between.
Some are good, some are very good. Some should be recording on major labels, but don't for various reasons. Some are... well, some are reminiscent of a neighborhood sing along.
One thing that many of these Christian artists have in common is that they offer their music for free via the internet, either streaming or downloadable to your computer or other device.
Streaming audio has become so common that the technology is no longer impressive, but if you sit at your computer doing mind numbing tasks, listening to free music without having to load or change CDs or even think about it, it's a real boon.
If you want to listen to Christian music without saving it to your computer, the possibilities are almost endless. By typing in "Free Christian music downloads" you'll be presented with what seems like an endless list of sites. Some of these are only for sheet music, but some are for audio files.
Take your pick of styles and locations. I found some great music at Innocent Music from the United Kingdom and from Emmanuel.org.ua, a site that offers Christian hits from Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia and Israel. They were all worth listening to.
However, when you find music you really like, you'll probably want to "own" it. Free downloadable music files can satisfy that longing for new music or music to take with you in the car or on your mp3 player, and there's plenty of good Christian music to be had for free.
Where do you find it? I thought you'd never ask.
Download.com is THE place for almost any downloadable file, and it does music very well (just tag "music" onto the front of their address to get there). Independent Christian musicians are represented well in their selections. You can drill down through the menu (which, at this writing, displays awkwardly in the Firefox browser), to the exact type of Christian music you prefer.
They're not all unknown indies here. As an example, one of the sweetest things Download.com offered was a full album made by Johnny Cash not long before his death. This one wasn't released to download, but you could listen to it time after time for a full week.
Other popular artists are there, but your best finds will come as you sample this one and that one from the lists of lesser known Christian musicians and vocalists. When you find artists you like, you can either listen to them through their (Download.com's) streaming player, or download the files to your computer. These are absolutely free, no strings attached. You can burn them or transfer them however you like.
Not everyone is at Download.com, though and probably some of what will become your favorite indie artists will be found accidentally. If you frequent Christian forums or simply look for "free Christian music" through a search engine, you'll find it.
Sean Dietrich is an indie that will amaze you. He's equally at ease with a piano as with a guitar and can sing a wonderful variety of songs very well. He writes his own that's the heart of the message he has. Some of his songs are obviously inspired by Keith Green, but by no means all are. From humor to soul grabbing honesty, Sean writes with a musical talent that is unusual, even in the professional world.
I first became aware of Sean Dietrich when he posted to the forum at "The God Journey." He invited everyone to listen to his music for free and I was entranced, as you will be. You can find him at seandietrich.com.
Another good place to find a variety of free Christian music is at
Christian Mp Free. You can preview songs and/or download them and there is some very good worship music to be found there.
The internet is alive with the sound of music - free Christian music!
